I was completely moved by Barack Obama’s speech last night and Michelle’s speech on Monday night. Its great to see a people of color making history.
Dear Ash Magazine,
29 AugRecently I’ve recieved a few questions from readers regarding how to get an internship and how to track similar shades of their fave lipsticks, here are my answers:
1) I would love to find a good magazine to intern for. More on the lines of fashion and beauty. could you help me?
-Kate
Dear Kate,
-If you want to intern in the fashion or beauty department, its best to look in the mastheads of your favorite magazines. Like, if your fave mag is Marie Claire, you buy a recent issue and check out the editorial masthead, and see whose is in the fashion and beauty departments. Google them, most magazines have e-mail addresses for their readers to use to contact their editors. Definitely check out Ed2010.com, its the best way to find info on current internships in the magazine industry (that’s where I landed my internship with AMBER Mag.com). If you’re in college, talk to anyone in your journalism department , communications department, or English department about info on internships.
Here is the link to the internship site on Ed2010.com, and be sure to look into joining an organization for journalists or people in the media, for example -New York Women in Communications, Inc. , National Assoication of Black Journalists, The National Assoication of Hispanic Journalists, the Asian American Journalists Assoication, etc.
2) Where can I get W n W clear lipgloss in a tube?
-Deb
Hi Deb, Wet’N'Wild’s Glassy Gloss Lip Gel has 311 Reflection. Also, check out Mega Slicks Lip Gloss 516 A Crystal Clear.
3) A. I was searching the Wet N Wild lipstick site to see what happened to 503A also. I live in Palm Desert, CA and haven’t been able to find it anywhere. Tried to decide what color might have replaced it, but didn’t have much luck there either.
Did you get information from anyone concerning a replacement?
Thanks, -Marilyn Scarborough
3) B. HELP!!! I’ve been using W and W lipstick and eye and lip liners for years…..I experimented with many lipsticks that proved to be useless to me because of wanting just a certain color and look…these lipsticks were from different companies also.
Then I found W and W’s 503-A……loved it and have been using it exclusively for ages, since it is what I was looking for. Now…..I can no longer find it anywhere where I live. I have tried all the shades around it, including 503-B and 510-A and others. Please help or give me a phone number for the company so I can get the needed info…..I just can’t stand to start in on another round of blind-tests trying to find the right color again!! Thanks
-P. Knowles
Hi Marilyn & P. Knowles,
I’ve searched the Internet looking for the 503-A shade, and haven’t found much. Most customers are asking the same questions as you, how can I find my shade? Can you either of you give me the color of 503-A. I’m not familiar with Wet’N'Wild’s lipsticks, mostly the glosses. If you want contact the company you can fill out a contact form on their website. If you’re having trouble looking for a drugstore that sells Wet’N'Wild, this link lists several stores who sell Wet’N'Wild cosmetics.
Harlem World, “I Really Like It”
29 AugHarlem World was a hip-hop group that former rapper-turned pastor-turned rapper Mase created in the late 90′s. It consisted of rappers Cardan, Stase (Mase’s twin sister) and rapper Blinky Blink. They are most known for their hit “I Really Like It”. Harlem World released an album, “The Movement”in 1999, which received bad reviews. Looking for info on this group was very difficult.. Typing “Harlem World” in search engines, the first thing that comes up is Mase’s album “Harlem World”. However, I chose this video because “I Really Like It” seems like a great song to play for the Labor Day weekend.
Ne-Yo, Miss Independent
22 AugNe-Yo “Miss Independent”
I love this song so much. I like songs by women, embracing independence and female empowerment, but songs by males about positive messages for women are rarely made and/or heard. Its great to see a man recognizing women’s accomplishments and not bringing a woman down for them. Its so inspirational on so many levels (for women, for African-American women). Kudos to Ne-Yo, he always makes the sweetest songs
Chatting w/ Delsha Moodley
21 Aug
I’m not a political person, but I do have some knowledge of the Zimbabwe election controversy. I had to read The New York Times for my journalism class and a new story on Zimbabwe seemed to pop up every week. Although various journalists and political analysts have shared their opinion on the country and its current situation, rarely have you heard from the actually people of Zimbabwe and their thoughts. Meet Delsha Moodley. Delsha is just like any other young woman in her twenties. She’s ambitious, motivated, full of life, etc and she just happens to be Zimbabwean. Delsha, who now calls the UK her home, contacted me via myspace. After learning she was Zimbabwean, I was eager to know what her thoughts were on the current state of her native country. Below is her perspective on Zimbabwe, Africa and its Diaspora.
Why Do You Want To Inform People About Zimbabwe?
Being that i am Zimbabwean born i feel it’s important to embrace my country and inform people about it. But as in a whole it’s important for all of us African descent people to not forget the Motherland and it’s people. I might be Zimbabwean but i feel we are all brothers and sisters, regardless of race, religion or culture. Mama Africa is misunderstood and very little is known about it including it’s history. People think of Africa as bushmen living in the wildlife with the lions. There is more to Africa, many people see the continent in a pessimistic view due to famine, disease, corruption, war and dictatorship.
What Are Your Thoughts on The Africa Dispora?
Nothing in life is perfect and not all sufferings can be eradicated, but making an effort to help those in need, i don’t mean billions of dollars in donations but even sponsoring a child in a third world country or ones own or monthly donations to certain organisations, does go a long way. We cannot save everyone but at least saving one person’s life is important including preserving wildlife habitats, i myself also sponsor a black rhino in Kenya, Kinyanjui as they are on the verge of extinction in Africa.
And thoughts on Africa?
For years many years slaves suffered torture but thank you to all those heros and heroines for their determination to be set free and live their lives as a human being, also thank you to all those non-africans that helped the abolition of slavery. It is important for us to try to be benevolent.
All those Africans taken from their countries still tried to keep their cultures going, yet they might have lost their lingo, they have managed to keep the African cultural heritage going strong through dance. That’s what i love is the music, the talent, the happiness, the rhythms, the drums that Africa brings to the World. Looking at Soca, Rumba, Hip Hop, Dancehall, Capoeira, Kwaito, Samba, Reggaeton, Reggae all these deriving from African descent people. The tradition of beads, feathers, fabric etc representing significance.
The flora and fauna, the beautiful attractions, the wildlife, the landscapes the harmony of life.
Africa is in the poorest, yes! But when music and dance is put to test they stay on top of the situation, bringing people closer together and happy, a time when rich and poor, young and old coalesce. Africa in a whole is in danger due to ethnic conflicts, military powers, dictatorship, greed, disease, especially HIV, crime, poverty, famine and war. But this is not caused by continent it is caused by certain human individuals that thrive to be acknowledged for their power.
So for me i suggest people should just start being loving to one another regardless if you born in Africa or not, we all came from there yeah! And look towards projects that help with education assistance to young children, because they are our future and need to be educated, able to read in order to know their rights, so they may be able to stand on their own two feet and secure a better future for themselves.
How Do You Want People To View Zimbabweans?
When i arrived in England, many people i met always asked me which country i came from and when i mentioned Zimbabwe, i always got them asking me questions especially about the political situation. They did not know anything about the country the President’s name was and all the violence portrayed by the media. I however never got involved in a political discussion, but many people wanted to know more about the country besides the negative side, so that’s why i decided to start my blog, so that people could access a bit more information on Zimbabwe on one site instead of searching so many websites. I obviously wanted to show the optimistic side of Zimbabwe.
What is your purpose for starting your blog?
My aim would be that i would like people to not stereotype Zimbabweans due to the issues on going in the country. Zimbabwean people are loving and happy beings with a strong family and spiritual background and they strive for a better education. Music and dance also plays a large part.
What Do You Think About The Voting Situation in Zimbabwe?
As far as politics and the voting scenario, i cannot comment on that because i do not know much about politics myself. My country is currently going through a lot of financial issues due to the ever rising inflation rate, this is affecting each and every being, therefore there is an increase in poverty, lack of jobs and opportunities, lack of investment. I hope the International and regional community will not turn their backs on Zimbabwe, because us non-political people have no say over the running of the country. We just want to live peacefully, happy and move on in life and strive for a better future. Zimbabwe once dubbed as the ‘basket of Africa’ is no longer but i remain optimistic that one day things will change. As far as Ihave read I see there will be talks with both the ruling and opposition party, so i do hope this will be the beginning of a prosperous Zimbabwe.

A Couple Hours at The Wendy Williams Show
20 Aug(My friend Deborah and Me at The Wendy Williams Show)
On August 6th , I left home about 6am to catch the train to New York City. I had a good reason to wake-up so early, I had tickets to see a live tapping of the Wendy Williams Show. I applied for tickets in late June and received a reply during mid July stating my request for tickets have been granted. I was excited. I’ve heard so many people say good things about Ms. Williams show, so I was excited to go.
Audience members were asked to be at the set by 8:15 am, so since I’m not good at directions, I left early to give myself enough time to lost and to get there on time. While walking, I recieved a couple compliments from the nearby construction workers (courtesy of the dress code for Wendy’s show). I later recognized that the building that hosts The Wendy Williams Show is right next to the construction site, so the workers were used to see beautifully dressed women since the show has been there. The were two lines when I got there, with the first one holding at least 100 people. I didn’t expect so many people to show up at 8am in the morning.
My friend Deborah met me later (with her very nice boyfriend) and we were able to go inside. After we signed in and got out tickets for the show and freshened up, we walked into The “How You Doin” room. The “How You Doin” room is just a little lounge where audience members sit and talk until their called to go into the studio for the show. Its very crowded and very loud, since their probably 200 to 250 people all talking at the same time. Everyone there is greeted by a few producers who ask us to fill out a survey, its for people who want to ask Wendy for advice for her segment “Ask Wendy”. I’m too shy so I decline. Later, we’re called in and we get in out seats. I’m so excited.
The studio is a lot smaller than it looks on television. Later, the producers introduce their selves and even start a dance off to get everybody excited for show ( a woman in an orange dress wins hands down and gets a tote bag with the Wendy Williams Show Logo on).
Wendy is person looks exactly the same, she is very tall and full of life. My favorite part of the show was when Boys 2 Men performed and Nathan and Shawn gave out roses in the audience . Guess who got one? Me! I was so nervous when I saw Nathan walking up the aisle, I thought I was going to have a heart attack. I was so happy, if he would of sang to me, then I would’ve definitely had a hear attack LOL. I had a great time and loved every minute of it.
Although this is the last week of the six-week run of The Wendy Williams Show, her show has been picked up by FOX and will turn next year!!!! So be sure to tune in during 2009 to catch new episodes of the show.
Check out the recap video here: at:19, you can see me and Deborah in the far left (way in the back).
A few photos of the beautiful flower:
Congratulations to Ellen and Portia
20 AugOver the weekend Ellen Degeneres and Portia De Rossi were married in California. Only twenty guests were present (including both Ellen & Portia’s mom’s). Check out their wedding photos and much more when the next issue of People Magazine hits newsstands this Friday. Congratulations to Ellen and Portia !!!!
It’s about time, I look at marriage as love and commitment between two people, other things like sexual orientation/race/religion etc. doesn’t matter. As longs as there’s love, its really all that matters.
Check This Site Out: If Looks Could Kill
20 AugIf you have any spare time and you’re near a computer, check out :If Looks Could Kill. Don’t be fooled by the title, this webisode series has a mixture of drama, suspense and a stash of Lifetime movie potential (which is a good thing). The webisodes follow main character Bianca, an up-coming fashion designer whose world is caught upside down when she meets up with her estranged father (whose apart of the CIA). She soon learns that people are after her, which begins the “cat and mouse” game between her and her enemies and us to help her.
I’ve been going on the site for last couple of weeks, watching the webisodes and trying to help Bianca find clues to help her (which is often tricky and difficult). Its alot of fun and can be alittle addictive, (kind of like when you’re playing a video game and you’re striving to get to that top level, but you continue to mess up in the end). Although the contest to win the new 2009 Toyota Camry V6 XLE to win is over, the webisodes will keep you coming back to the site for more.
